Road Map to Retirement Financial Plan

Our Team

David Peterson, JD, CFP®     President

David Peterson discovered his passion for financial advice as an in-house attorney for a major health insurance provider. As such, his law practice specialized in protecting employee retirement income and portfolios, which eventually inspired the 1997 formation of an outstanding team of financial professionals, known today as Denver-based Peak Capital Investment Services.

As President of Peak Capital, with 18 advisors and more than $350 million in assets under management, Mr. Peterson's expertise goes far beyond that of the average financial planner. Although he no longer practices law, Mr. Peterson is not only a Certified Financial PlannerTM Practitioner, he also holds a Series 6, 7, 24, 31, 33 and 65. David has been admitted to the Paladin Registry with a Five Star quality designation by scoring in the top 10% of his profession.   Additionally he has completed the David Ramsey Financial Peace University.

As a Registered Principal with LPL Financial, David now specializes in estate and retirement planning for high net-worth investors and retirement planning for employees of major companies including Xcel Energy, Qwest, Lockheed Martin, Verizon and AT&T. Yet it takes more than product knowledge to guide a successful portfolio: David trains a keen eye on regional and national economies for his Colorado and Texas-based clients, as well as those living nationwide and abroad.

David is listed twice in Forbes Magazine (Jan/08 and March/08) as one of the Ten Most Dependable Wealth Managers in the Rocky Mountain Region and in Texas. He is also listed as one of Colorado's Top 20 Independent Wealth Advisers from 2007 by The Denver Business Journal. David is also a sought after industry spokesperson in the media and is frequently quoted as a financial expert in The Rocky Mountain News, has a cover story profile in BOOMER Market Advisor Magazine and wa s recently on Fox Business News, CNBC and the Bravo network with Alexander Haig's 21st Century Business Report program.

"People nearing retirement are more cautious than ever before when it comes to, say, the rollover of company pensions and 401(k)s," Peterson says. "What was once a fairly simple process now requires constant vigilance. You can't do it without a regional, national and global economic perspective in order to find the best opportunities for risk-conscious clients."

Will the short-term cost of living increase or decrease in Colorado and Texas? How will the regional economy affect housing, transportation, employment and medical services? What impact would such elements have on client portfolios in the decades to come? "While you factor all of the above into a client's long-term financial needs, you need more," Peterson adds. "A client may have a very low risk tolerance, but that client needs to understand that if the portfolio is invested in this manner, the client is certain to outlive his or her money.   This often involves difficult conversations where clients are forced to realize that they must adjust their risk tolerance or delay retirement.

"As investors, we're all part of today's fast-changing global arena," Peterson notes, "which is why it is so important for every financial advisor to be a lifelong student of global economies. It takes an array of experts, from the highest echelons of LPL to the astute regional observer, to create and monitor today's cutting edge portfolio."   David works with clients out of the Colorado and Texas Peak offices.
